The town was slowly transforming from a collection of small adobe huts and hovels to more permanant structures as Santa Rosa looked to the future. There was a sense of peace as Sheriff McNaughton and his deputies began their morning rounds. As the deputies greeted a few of the locals and proprieters there were a few anxious whispers of the notorious Sneaky Pete and his gang.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3-ltbfVfgQbgyJZ4pXqUC1xu_gnmZP8W54c3ce4t-XZbXZNPpHNsGYfqc92-HQ7aiMH-YWEyu-F1IUEa2Tmo1DZ3_SFuTJFRer1Kv2pP2jYA4SPtfh3RpdETXOAiJT47cG8lNZB7gOsA/s1600/Cropped_122718.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3-ltbfVfgQbgyJZ4pXqUC1xu_gnmZP8W54c3ce4t-XZbXZNPpHNsGYfqc92-HQ7aiMH-YWEyu-F1IUEa2Tmo1DZ3_SFuTJFRer1Kv2pP2jYA4SPtfh3RpdETXOAiJT47cG8lNZB7gOsA/s320/Cropped_122718.jpg" width="320" height="314" data-original-width="1024" data-original-height="1004" /></a></div>
Sneaky Pete and his gang of thugs had indeed arrived in the town late in the night. They were staying at the bar and bunkhouse at the east end of town. The new bank at the west end of town was a target for Sneaky Pete's lustful greed. As daylight broke over the town, he sent his men out on both sides of the town to get into position to assault the bank and rob its vault.

Because of the rumors around the town, the deputies had a heightened awareness and noticed the strangers skulking down the back alleys of Santa Rosa. A deputy bellowed a challenge as Sneaky Pete tried to get behind him. Shots would soon ring out breaking the stillness and quiet of early morning.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3XNlHY5ymMPnzXIECjaxGMneKfHC_sBe1-lpdpvJlx2xmK8HtL04d4EMmUrblkE_G8CFFGy-VQ5Cj1qb1B5Jg3Sr5BdoFiSG36r8621waUihkF-clrS1FpUDM8fKMn2G2Tg0pgX1B9ic/s1600/Cropped_125424.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3XNlHY5ymMPnzXIECjaxGMneKfHC_sBe1-lpdpvJlx2xmK8HtL04d4EMmUrblkE_G8CFFGy-VQ5Cj1qb1B5Jg3Sr5BdoFiSG36r8621waUihkF-clrS1FpUDM8fKMn2G2Tg0pgX1B9ic/s320/Cropped_125424.jpg" width="280" height="320" data-original-width="895" data-original-height="1024" /></a></div>
As the shots rang out, the sheriff was shot right through his badge and died immediately. Revenge was swift as the cowering thug was shot through the head by a deputy.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjqEzIHI_SHhtYp7NOUTmQ4H4li49SqrU1zat3we1nvNFIGPb4gKqYAaStNvYOk7wF96eeDqlIkQhtJtsJxsGUlkxzv8zuJukSoI6hj_fUiXSVTtu6IPDeKgSTPpxQsr9fEIAHoeadGj0E/s1600/Cropped_131218.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjqEzIHI_SHhtYp7NOUTmQ4H4li49SqrU1zat3we1nvNFIGPb4gKqYAaStNvYOk7wF96eeDqlIkQhtJtsJxsGUlkxzv8zuJukSoI6hj_fUiXSVTtu6IPDeKgSTPpxQsr9fEIAHoeadGj0E/s320/Cropped_131218.jpg" width="283" height="320" data-original-width="904" data-original-height="1024" /></a></div>
A blood alley developed, as usual, close to the jail house.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEguEojn7qQ7PObTsWU0TDxl_63NJ3Ke9b_7l6tNSXkqccK0UWmPS7CqYyXKHs9fLwn6g8ba0Hxea4T0sWNqLKAAzYidkP3wGNMbmBrUKKUKADYLLqIYixs0kAriaGBYXxZrf6ImVTNvOKg/s1600/Cropped_133301.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEguEojn7qQ7PObTsWU0TDxl_63NJ3Ke9b_7l6tNSXkqccK0UWmPS7CqYyXKHs9fLwn6g8ba0Hxea4T0sWNqLKAAzYidkP3wGNMbmBrUKKUKADYLLqIYixs0kAriaGBYXxZrf6ImVTNvOKg/s320/Cropped_133301.jpg" width="240" height="320" data-original-width="768" data-original-height="1024" /></a></div>
With all the distraction going on, Sneaky Pete does what he does best and stealthily moves to the back of the bank building. Maybe that back door will not be guarded.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8Fcnf7iXfL4KfWfr2BxOrHdrqJGcikcMw6nQHOzleanfLQOacGCc0W94y6AshlpCjGX47VD5af7UfTiw5_H10BiOGiR2lPZctOxEX2pDzb-B749Ux9A8quw3pjMa1KcD5fqIGx9ZFWQE/s1600/Cropped_133944.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8Fcnf7iXfL4KfWfr2BxOrHdrqJGcikcMw6nQHOzleanfLQOacGCc0W94y6AshlpCjGX47VD5af7UfTiw5_H10BiOGiR2lPZctOxEX2pDzb-B749Ux9A8quw3pjMa1KcD5fqIGx9ZFWQE/s320/Cropped_133944.jpg" width="320" height="228" data-original-width="1024" data-original-height="728" /></a></div>
As the remaining deputies and thugs moved to action in the bank, one deputy eliminates a thug while suffering a wound.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMH6RRr4oyUX7b1rGXCXe0Tw8-7LtMwJ-to-D1QqQzfgh1nwQ-MhQ8k8OlCOa7pXmvxhy1nvzVfovHAsW2VrOIqbviirrpIGivJLyQRgqkjckxFb7Hmhj4Vl8_6Mz-jQeWmxda6q8-zuo/s1600/Cropped_145522.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMH6RRr4oyUX7b1rGXCXe0Tw8-7LtMwJ-to-D1QqQzfgh1nwQ-MhQ8k8OlCOa7pXmvxhy1nvzVfovHAsW2VrOIqbviirrpIGivJLyQRgqkjckxFb7Hmhj4Vl8_6Mz-jQeWmxda6q8-zuo/s320/Cropped_145522.jpg" width="251" height="320" data-original-width="803" data-original-height="1024" /></a></div>
In the final moments Sneaky Pete and a deputy have a point blank gun duel through the vaults outer door. Although Sneaky Pete was wounded twice, his final shot killed the deputy in the vault and he was able to escape with the loot.

John and I played this scenario twice yesterday. He played Sneaky Pete in the first game, I played him in the second. Both games were won by the bad guys. For the rumors we used an odd/even die roll on whether the sheriff's men were aware that Pete's gang was in town. Also we assumed that the deputies struggled to lock the vault doors because of the unfamiliar keys. A roll of 5 or better locked the door. In the image above, the deputy missed the locking roll and had to face Sneaky Pete with the door ajar.

I am slowly replacing my adobe buildings that I made years ago with models from 4Ground. The bank model is highly detailed and took me several days work to finish. I do like the results.

Taking a break from Longstreet, I put on a game of Fistful of Lead with my son John. The scenario was simple, a payroll had been hidden somewhere in town. Two gangs were coming in to find it and steal it. When a character entered a building a poker chip was drawn from a bag. Blue meant nothing was found, red was a surprise gunshot at the intruder and a white chip meant the treasure was discovered. Dawn breaks on the sleepy town of Santa Rosa.
</p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBjOSQHH_FBj-xEJJH-zVmjxRvSokdsyXxTYHYDWl3bz8uW4Nb6IucyLh1WOXYz27rfnOGMq-w_u7fnO1QdGvW2ZzHcK1O-NoKoHHjD-0gInsdERDW_VXzn-UNvKuN7CeSyZKfDH1K3rY/s1600/160218_Town.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="793" data-original-width="1024" height="248" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBjOSQHH_FBj-xEJJH-zVmjxRvSokdsyXxTYHYDWl3bz8uW4Nb6IucyLh1WOXYz27rfnOGMq-w_u7fnO1QdGvW2ZzHcK1O-NoKoHHjD-0gInsdERDW_VXzn-UNvKuN7CeSyZKfDH1K3rY/s320/160218_Town.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<p>
John played Amarillo Shamrock and his gang of cowpokes. They started on the south road just outside of town. Amarillo's job was to find the treasure and exit on the north or west roads. Doing some harm to Nigel and his nefarious crew would be a bonus.</p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzBY0NB03htfEdKRyjqWGJe_RxC8tbqYkfGGiIfK0ck49sDr5cSgkgGvP7qJ-q6DGyU0onhzgn4TGe3S33OD9Ykzvo2IaaMMnElUlI7p1U0WF1L5Fe1tY3oR3CT72y5rnUxR0J2IN92os/s1600/160104_Amarillo.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="631" data-original-width="1024" height="197" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzBY0NB03htfEdKRyjqWGJe_RxC8tbqYkfGGiIfK0ck49sDr5cSgkgGvP7qJ-q6DGyU0onhzgn4TGe3S33OD9Ykzvo2IaaMMnElUlI7p1U0WF1L5Fe1tY3oR3CT72y5rnUxR0J2IN92os/s320/160104_Amarillo.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<p>
I played Nigel Cumberbund and his European mercenaries. My gang started on the north road just outside of town. Nigel's task was to find the treasure, neutralize Amarillo and his crooks, then exit on the south or east roads. </p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjgMJTzDrGdSznDyA9kiQlicFM0CPeIA6O1J2sMs5m46SWDYM1a-sFcldg4z3I8sONnqO9KWRzsJ2fz2OYi49GBQ6f3v8W3tt8EfledjKUYhEUsT8TRLEGFy_Q401IADYB88kc9S7otz4c/s1600/160117_Nigel.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="651" data-original-width="1024" height="203" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjgMJTzDrGdSznDyA9kiQlicFM0CPeIA6O1J2sMs5m46SWDYM1a-sFcldg4z3I8sONnqO9KWRzsJ2fz2OYi49GBQ6f3v8W3tt8EfledjKUYhEUsT8TRLEGFy_Q401IADYB88kc9S7otz4c/s320/160117_Nigel.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<p>
As soon as the gangs got within range of each other, gun-fire broke out. As in every game of FFoL ever played a blood alley began to develop. </p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7md-AwmYKclM5JNEZ4iGwYr09p6ZQ3Np0Ld4q3ZNNP5uOuyhQajL1wPrvIGP94hdCXVz8M3seW1DYKz4xCXfsW5gMRTE7m4rKtSdQSHOCFLJaVEDUbmp6XQflDYWbcwgVnzM5Fmo-w_U/s1600/150327_BloodAlley001.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;""><img border="0" data-original-height="733" data-original-width="1024" height="229" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7md-AwmYKclM5JNEZ4iGwYr09p6ZQ3Np0Ld4q3ZNNP5uOuyhQajL1wPrvIGP94hdCXVz8M3seW1DYKz4xCXfsW5gMRTE7m4rKtSdQSHOCFLJaVEDUbmp6XQflDYWbcwgVnzM5Fmo-w_U/s320/150327_BloodAlley001.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<p>
One particular corner was especially busy. Lead was flying non-stop and members of each gang were pinned, wounded or DRT. (an homage to gentleman Bill McHarg - he coined "Dead Right There" or DRT many years ago.) </p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhP24yPE0nbJ68NZbgpvsQy3aTWCVm-KonIU6UPM7bB8ff3GtcWZBAAvleaCCVPHTYRhyofuk0ASgLalCooC7i6RJSfG4NJ8VwI3SmoGCvdmxUoVrFoZU-a8q7irpAdjKA57n0Jxq2DQF8/s1600/150239_BloodAlley002.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="768" data-original-width="1024" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhP24yPE0nbJ68NZbgpvsQy3aTWCVm-KonIU6UPM7bB8ff3GtcWZBAAvleaCCVPHTYRhyofuk0ASgLalCooC7i6RJSfG4NJ8VwI3SmoGCvdmxUoVrFoZU-a8q7irpAdjKA57n0Jxq2DQF8/s320/150239_BloodAlley002.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<p>Most of the buildings have now been explored, the treasure must be in one of the last two. Both gangs started heading for the final confrontation and a chance for the loot.</p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRvRb5Vvwc4dNWf-0IaN978MKcVPPr-RUVIKc-LJUbchojJpeaFFncOA74gAQ7Q8IN0cB-I-F6H6vnWN5J4T7aEJafCH6IwlrSMzXuMDBCvb4zFI4lZz6LXeLFokTB22Kc3HNXciDDqAU/s1600/150233_TownExplored.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="699" data-original-width="1024" height="218" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRvRb5Vvwc4dNWf-0IaN978MKcVPPr-RUVIKc-LJUbchojJpeaFFncOA74gAQ7Q8IN0cB-I-F6H6vnWN5J4T7aEJafCH6IwlrSMzXuMDBCvb4zFI4lZz6LXeLFokTB22Kc3HNXciDDqAU/s320/150233_TownExplored.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<p>One of Nigel's gang hid behind a barrel in a dark alley. When he got the chance he dropped Amarillo like a hot rock. Some say the shot was cowardly, others applauded the stealth.</p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<p>John and I played this scenario three times that day. It was a ton of fun. This AAR was about the third and final game because it was the closest action and result. FFoL is my favorite skirmish game bar none. It plays clean and fast and John knew the rules in about two turns. We used the Horse and Musket card deck because of the additional special cards. However we stayed with the old hand to hand combat system. I had forgotten how brutal H2H was in the original rules. Next time we play the newer H2H combat system will be in effect.</p>
<p>John really enjoys post apocalyptic games, so Galactic Heros will be in our future plans. I realized that I have several new painting and scenery projects to do in order to get ready. I am looking forward to it! Thanks to <a href="https://wiley-games.myshopify.com/">Wiley Games</a> for many hours of enjoyable and happy gaming. </p>

It was one of those where I had to make scenery like mad all during the week before the battle. The corn stalks are model railroading material that led me all over town looking for packages. I am pretty happy with how they turned out and now I have plenty for future games. </p>
<p>The cornfield scenario stated that this battle was Sanguinary. I had to look that word up. It was appropriate for the last battle as the Confederates would fight on desperately past their normal army break point. John's Union forces were much larger than my Rebs. Also this scenario brought some relief from his artillery advantage. It was exactly the scenario I needed to flip the campaign in my favor.</p>

The best overview of the table. Battle is already in progress.
<p>I really like the Longstreet system. After playing all 9 battles I have an appreciation how this game simulates the historical dominance of the Union supply over a number of years. Command cards become precious to the Rebel commander. By 1865 the Rebel command deck is about two-thirds of the Union deck. I became concerned about spending cards to soak up casualties because of the limited deck.</p>

Rebels hunkering in the corn, hiding from artillery.
<p> There is one card in the deck that can be truly diabolical when played against a commander. The "They Couldn't Hit An..." card forces the unlucky commander to roll a die and discard that number of cards from his current hand of 6. John used his to perfection and caught me precisely at the moment when I was ready to unleash the hounds. I rolled a 4 and my plans went up in smoke. </p>

The Mud Dogs awaiting their doom.
<p>In the end, the Rebels were defeated soundly. The war is over. The final epic point total was Pellets McKenney with 40 points and the rank of 4 Eagles. Eustace P Marmalade with 37 points and the rank of 2 Eagles. The campaign system was a complete pleasure and I had a blast competing against my son. I highly recommend the Longstreet rules. Next up for will be some Fast Play Grande Armee. Happy gaming everybody. </p>

We have had three more battles since my last post and they have all been a sheer pleasure to game. I have forgotten to take a lot of pictures during those games in the heat of the battle. The pictures are also limited for this battle. These few will serve as a battle report on our second battle of 1864. We rolled the Hilltop scenario in the Longstreet campaign system. I rolled well on the scouting roll and chose defense of the hills.

A desperate battle is joined in the woods. The Reb infantry was winning this battlefield hot-spot.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDDkyeyJH6leBgtlq68yflyqdWF2nOU8NPB8JHsYUP8kLJQJkJ8gry1mJ9VH2dCmsEB4YzeWcI6WTAG3tnQ79ViKkD-ysGqjHRiI92_AgS1t1oL0dEU-5XfPSqjtInRAAk2C3FPQ-8oqY/s1600/Crop_161744.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDDkyeyJH6leBgtlq68yflyqdWF2nOU8NPB8JHsYUP8kLJQJkJ8gry1mJ9VH2dCmsEB4YzeWcI6WTAG3tnQ79ViKkD-ysGqjHRiI92_AgS1t1oL0dEU-5XfPSqjtInRAAk2C3FPQ-8oqY/s400/Crop_161744.jpg" width="400" height="214" data-original-width="1024" data-original-height="547" /></a></div>
Meanwhile out on the Reb far right flank, the Union troops run into some dismounted Reb cavalry. The Rebs had the cover and were able to inflict some casualties in a fire fight.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQum5Wc73azAzIkJZfqjBIk4m5Txw0WrNRirO1kZ2rmuICA4LM0WsmfvAiFPtk1X4InYx-R0mjKUu-pDVOZv6mQqnxDoNLGJUCHVp7KdNraVWEatdTgbASN0-j3e0uwWs2MPtqBJHzi_8/s1600/Crop_132902.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQum5Wc73azAzIkJZfqjBIk4m5Txw0WrNRirO1kZ2rmuICA4LM0WsmfvAiFPtk1X4InYx-R0mjKUu-pDVOZv6mQqnxDoNLGJUCHVp7KdNraVWEatdTgbASN0-j3e0uwWs2MPtqBJHzi_8/s400/Crop_132902.jpg" width="400" height="296" data-original-width="1024" data-original-height="757" /></a></div>
In a desperation move, the Union cavalry charges the guns in hope to gain an objective point.
<p>During this entire campaign we have both experienced hot and cold dice to one extreme or another. On this last battle I had been rolling hot and John not so much. I had been already rolling for victory checks and missing them while John had not inflicted enough damage to check. However when he charged my guns he was able to drive off my infantry, capture a gun or two and most importantly capture an objective marker. </p>
<p>The calculated army break-point was 22. He had done 10 points of damage so far but that objective marker allowed him a second die to roll. He shook his dice for a long while and cast them onto the table. Boxcars! Victory!</p>
<p>This is exactly why I game. For moments like these. John was so excited to pull a victory out of thin air. It was a terrific moment for the two of us. Our next battle will decide the campaign. After eight games we are only two points apart in the standings with John leading. Our next scenario is the Cornfields. I will TRY to remember to take more pictures. </p>

The brigade of E.P. Marmalade has been given orders to defend the crossroads until reinforcements come up later. Precisely how long that may be is unknown. All Marmalade can see is one hot damn mess of Yanks and their artillery.<br />

<br />
At this point, the Union center has been stalled with decent Rebel cannon fire. For this battle McKenney was not as fortunate with his cannonade.<br /><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPmNnX43zr9jtVJ6pKsydGG0nEJBstdBHxQ1SEK-N-8KxOfjGzT5nWD4Jicpm-umvGq8nOXqYtoZwOlE_nWpv3RTI-DBYoq1iWeur3G4h38td1agOhVn9B4EaTyQ3izzw7syoFk3Gl-1k/s1600/MidpointBattle.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="851" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPmNnX43zr9jtVJ6pKsydGG0nEJBstdBHxQ1SEK-N-8KxOfjGzT5nWD4Jicpm-umvGq8nOXqYtoZwOlE_nWpv3RTI-DBYoq1iWeur3G4h38td1agOhVn9B4EaTyQ3izzw7syoFk3Gl-1k/s320/MidpointBattle.png" width="302" /></a></div>

Since the Reb cavalry was dismounted and committed to a position, McKenney ordered his cavalry to sweep around the other flank at an attempt of encirclement. <br />

Marmalade immediately countered the maneuver by about facing his rear guard battalion and drawing two guns off the front line to meet the threat. It was a risk but the Union center had taken a large number of casualties so far.<br /><br />

Pellets McKenney unleashed the fury in a cavalry charge. This time the southern boys were ready. A quick vicious brawl resulted in the loss of one of his Cavalry units and the retreat of the other. (Sadly, I forgot to take a picture during the charge.) As they tried to retire to reform, another Rebel gun was turned in their direction.<br /><br />

Marmalade retracted his right flank to protect his artillery and dismounted cavalry. As this was occurring, he continued to snipe at McKenney's troops on his left. With a few lucky shots he was able to break the Union attack and the battle was over. <br />
<br />
This was also the second time where the phrase "Need a six, rolled a six." has been used in our campaign. Marmalade has gotten lucky twice on the victory check. Whew! Here is the final position of the battle.<br /><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

After the game, we went through the campaign post battle process. There were no promotions, but John gets more artillery! He is at the maximum now for the year 1863. We also rolled for the next scenario which is "Meeting Engagement". The scenario describes an unplanned meeting on a pike out in the middle of nowhere. It will be interesting. I will post a report after that battle.Essjamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15312645606219749724noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4348639225984169827.post-82458847415410655352018-09-06T22:52:00.001-07:002018-09-06T22:57:01.059-07:00Longstreet - Clear the Treeline - 1863 Battle #1This entry is more accurately described as the Tuesday afternoon butt kicking. My son was finally over the crud and we got a chance to play Longstreet again. We randomly rolled the Clear the Treeline scenario and I won the scouting roll. My first and most fatal decision for the Rebs was to choose, Attack. It was a massacre as John played his forces extremely well. He had a 2 to 1 advantage in artillery and used it wisely. The scenario created a really pretty battle table and we used all my deciduous trees. I had to break out a few conifers to complete the layout. Someday I must remember to finish basing the trees. Oh well.<br />
<br />
Here is the overview of the table:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjP6uj3Of7Mm_EnKLUdLofJ0Uh7Av_xSga3bCDUjpJNq06L7jKqLSjgIbEG7pDmBrhceTwqVXFx0enr-k1qtoW38k5A7kPyUpi16cu2hf-nSwMAuRc_V5RlZx50roKrzRUCaZsaCUu3RLM/s1600/121133_crop.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="551" data-original-width="900" height="195" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjP6uj3Of7Mm_EnKLUdLofJ0Uh7Av_xSga3bCDUjpJNq06L7jKqLSjgIbEG7pDmBrhceTwqVXFx0enr-k1qtoW38k5A7kPyUpi16cu2hf-nSwMAuRc_V5RlZx50roKrzRUCaZsaCUu3RLM/s320/121133_crop.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
If one looks closely, the objective marker is placed behind the small copse of trees above the plowed ground. The Confederate columns and artillery marched slowly forward under constant fire from the Union guns. None of the Reb columns were unscathed. Here is early in the action as the columns begin their push forward.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgOK5mUOckYPPQyaydWAx2EWxl6RjgEZlIcGkjR0v8fXdyUwDLNgIyp95l5dqTdLPDj1_UM95uj2mLd7RY06lyGrdiY1MnoF1VUkws14Wu5xNsFw5eu0zc_poloLuyquyWcjlI2TjVF0sY/s1600/124603_crop.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="352" data-original-width="900" height="125" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgOK5mUOckYPPQyaydWAx2EWxl6RjgEZlIcGkjR0v8fXdyUwDLNgIyp95l5dqTdLPDj1_UM95uj2mLd7RY06lyGrdiY1MnoF1VUkws14Wu5xNsFw5eu0zc_poloLuyquyWcjlI2TjVF0sY/s320/124603_crop.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
Obviously Eustace P Marmalade did not have a good scouting report before the battle, otherwise he may have been tempted to return to the plantation and pen his memoirs. Here Pellets McKenney is gleefully orders his massed artillery to open fire on the Rebel columns.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhi_aMzQuD_P4G4QSp_3k4opGLGTapGETdSjXI59mtJ68vx7xO20xX_YU5dgYhtMwrqsL1zQD02dFwJD3beyIaIKeBLqS1RrybiRGW63gq3neJv0LiWLrapZObmCcoYbdtByIJ9AhQ6poU/s1600/124622_crop.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="467" data-original-width="900" height="166" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhi_aMzQuD_P4G4QSp_3k4opGLGTapGETdSjXI59mtJ68vx7xO20xX_YU5dgYhtMwrqsL1zQD02dFwJD3beyIaIKeBLqS1RrybiRGW63gq3neJv0LiWLrapZObmCcoYbdtByIJ9AhQ6poU/s320/124622_crop.png" width="320" /></a></div>
The Rebs were getting pounded and attempted to charge the Union guns. It was not a pretty sight as ball-shot and eventually canister tore through their ranks.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRJ2cVREMo7323SFAkek6lIi8j8sEGRASPfpP4dkGM5Moh6OMiZ2WZIcS2gvtbade3H8_PNRp5DbDWLB4ZB31cwcTZXAOa3DareFz4YFz_Oc5N7BsvoE7n51hD2xkL9MmIN23jWbzsaY0/s1600/131004_crop.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="549" data-original-width="900" height="195" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRJ2cVREMo7323SFAkek6lIi8j8sEGRASPfpP4dkGM5Moh6OMiZ2WZIcS2gvtbade3H8_PNRp5DbDWLB4ZB31cwcTZXAOa3DareFz4YFz_Oc5N7BsvoE7n51hD2xkL9MmIN23jWbzsaY0/s320/131004_crop.png" width="320" /></a></div>
Meanwhile out on the Rebel left some of the columns were about to make contact with the Union troops in the woods. The Yanks were ready for the fight and had several successful volleys.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDiwjj-sBgAqLDhy5cTlmKE3f3CUUUDThmFStATTmZ111VvJp3pu-YD1vVY4bvTePi9-ZHE4vt1FVdaYMN3TDYPniU6arkNYfdNJffQmRN52mJ9Oav8i47tO6SqApDw3xU6p62CVFum1E/s1600/131019_crop.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="666" data-original-width="900" height="236" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDiwjj-sBgAqLDhy5cTlmKE3f3CUUUDThmFStATTmZ111VvJp3pu-YD1vVY4bvTePi9-ZHE4vt1FVdaYMN3TDYPniU6arkNYfdNJffQmRN52mJ9Oav8i47tO6SqApDw3xU6p62CVFum1E/s320/131019_crop.png" width="320" /></a></div>
At this point, McKenney saw that the Reb forces were fully committed and he ordered his cavalry to sweep around the flanks and encircle the rebel forces. It was a nice maneuver and sealed the fate of the Rebel attack. The picture below does not show both flanks, but the Yankee Cavalry was there hooting and hollering.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi52PuqC6EpBsOilLl3tOJLXwe_RrigWM3peYnGYcVO8keLe3vLQJpr3tpXE82dGd4OD9oxctxZH8pwEEp2ztx-zpTSh3IMuLzA-ZU7KXlpxL9sDHUkO8haqgp_uspLv27fQgf7mD-jQdk/s1600/132305_crop.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="570" data-original-width="900" height="202" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi52PuqC6EpBsOilLl3tOJLXwe_RrigWM3peYnGYcVO8keLe3vLQJpr3tpXE82dGd4OD9oxctxZH8pwEEp2ztx-zpTSh3IMuLzA-ZU7KXlpxL9sDHUkO8haqgp_uspLv27fQgf7mD-jQdk/s320/132305_crop.png" width="320" /></a></div>
As the Rebel attack closed to contact, it was being overwhelmed by concentrated volleys, canister and the very real threat of the Yankee Cav coming up behind. Here the attack falters:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvi971g8w8DpCOefddlGDUjmToURhyW_xl3rVdG4qPTKXG13JcY0KSibF3zTAU4H9TLAFz6OdN5jsFMLdameakal_Q4MyjC_mSCEnAB2OTsx_4d0sN_Jlbc1kPycXZhEwrraBSwTCt0Uc/s1600/135411_crop.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="639" data-original-width="900" height="227" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvi971g8w8DpCOefddlGDUjmToURhyW_xl3rVdG4qPTKXG13JcY0KSibF3zTAU4H9TLAFz6OdN5jsFMLdameakal_Q4MyjC_mSCEnAB2OTsx_4d0sN_Jlbc1kPycXZhEwrraBSwTCt0Uc/s320/135411_crop.png" width="320" /></a></div>
In the next moment we see the Union Cav complete their encirclement and start to press forward into the Rebel rear.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisAt6q4rj37xjsGpzHkg9Bbp8RXAdjiPn6960EgQWuv70FVsxcz0mi_0j6BY5RB7WEk9uO0yypbyTok0fV2ocgKgchuqhYaZ7euxwvrtmJM_d6twbsW9wHkkoVO_wAlWyU5DmdoJmBnsM/s1600/135435_crop.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="696" data-original-width="900" height="247" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisAt6q4rj37xjsGpzHkg9Bbp8RXAdjiPn6960EgQWuv70FVsxcz0mi_0j6BY5RB7WEk9uO0yypbyTok0fV2ocgKgchuqhYaZ7euxwvrtmJM_d6twbsW9wHkkoVO_wAlWyU5DmdoJmBnsM/s320/135435_crop.png" width="320" /></a></div>
Although the Rebel attack was being halted, the Union was bringing up more reinforcements at the end. Here is a picture from the Union perspective.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgya40kwVngyuTfhdfGj46pN38TpUgq0kys0_9PWzN1aijf_yrG2y_DC7Y0JD75V73jdkOpk8hSbPQdiRzNrKQ5luPvWwwqERqfBWPWzrIj1sw0r2o7fuzd0g9b500_cZJLkWmBMId72Ak/s1600/135454_crop.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="587" data-original-width="900" height="208" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgya40kwVngyuTfhdfGj46pN38TpUgq0kys0_9PWzN1aijf_yrG2y_DC7Y0JD75V73jdkOpk8hSbPQdiRzNrKQ5luPvWwwqERqfBWPWzrIj1sw0r2o7fuzd0g9b500_cZJLkWmBMId72Ak/s320/135454_crop.png" width="320" /></a></div>
Mercifully during the phase for victory check, John rolled what he needed and the game was over. Army break point was 20 stands. Total damage, the Yanks had killed 16 stands, including all but one stand of the Rebel artillery. The Rebs had only managed two kills for the whole engagement. The battle was as lop-sided as it sounds. My son is an artillery assassin. He has been this whole campaign. I am having a blast battling a very wily opponent. <br />

My son and I were
inspired by the<a href="http://baronvonj.blogspot.com/search/label/Longstreet"> Baron and his son</a> to start a Longstreet campaign. I
must say it has been an incredible amount of fun. We have played
three battles now and our armies are starting to develop some
character. I highly recommend the Longstreet rule set, by Sam Mustafa, to all. It is
very entertaining and provides a chance for some quality time
together.</div>
<div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
The campaign system
provides overall flavor for the individual commanders as well as lighthearted moments as the post battle process takes place. If
one is rolling Ones on that particular day then a plague of camp
fever is likely to produce more casualties than the actual battle.
</div>
<div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
My son is playing
the Union side in this first campaign. His commander is a Mexican
War Veteran and Drill Master named Jack “Pellets” McKenna. He
commands a brigade of troops from Rhode Island. When we started this
campaign, his troops were all eager recruits, after three battles his
brigade is a mix of cautious veterans and new recruits. And after
three battles, it is apparent that Pellets McKenna is an absolute
assassin when using counter battery fire.
</div>
<div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
The Confederate
troops are a brigade of rascals from deep in Georgia. A former
Cavalry Officer and Drill Master, Eustace P. Marmalade, has been
granted command of this fine and eager brigade. While George Pickett
may have graduated last in his class at West Point, Marmalade may
have been a close second. He has proven to be an offensively minded
commander that loves to charge. After the second battle his antics
were so brazen that he got his name in the papers back home.
</div>
<div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
We have been been
using the random scenarios from the Longstreet rule book. Our battle
in 1861 was the Walled Farm scenario. Pellets McKenna won that
engagement handily, kill off most of the Confederate artillery in one
battle. EP Marmalade just couldn’t quite understand that charging
a walled defensive position was not a great idea. McKenna was
promoted after that battle for meritorious conduct.</div>

Marmalade had some room to maneuver and get his boys in a position to
ram his charges home. The fortunes of war (dice gods) were smiling
on Marmalade that day and it was a decided Rebel victory. Eustace P
Marmalade was promoted after the battle and a picture of him astride
his faithful mount Macaroon was shown in all the papers from Savannah
to Atlanta. Pellets McKenna was also promoted by an act of congress
because of his continued ability to destroy enemy artillery.</div>

<div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
The third battle was
the Outflanking scenario. By the campaign system it is the final
battle for 1862. This one had a bit of everything including some
extremely poor surveying that completely missed a rocky out-cropping
that appeared somewhat magically. This was a battle where Pellets
McKenna seemed to have the advantage the whole game but EP Marmalade
kept sniping at the union troops and snatched a victory out of thin
air.

On the outflanking
scenario, one objective is positioned outside of the confederate
staging area to the left (Union right). The Rebs deploy first, but
the Union gets the first move. Once the rebel position was observed,
Pellets ordered his command to grab the exposed objective. He came
around the rebel left flank like an avalanche. </div>

Longstreet has been
a rare treat for my son and me. It has provided some great
entertainment and a lot of projects for me to complete on a
timetable. For example, my son’s artillery advantage beginning the
1863 battle is now eight stands to five and that is only because I
got lucky on a campaign card after the last battle. I now need to
paint some more union artillery. It has also provided for those
priceless gaming moments where they become part of our gaming lore.

It was an amazing day as all the family was together for the first time in a long, long time. Seeing how my children have grown and matured has made me a little emotional and admittedly verklempt. That is okay, it was a very beautiful day and I am embracing that emotion for the sheer joy it has brought. I wish the best for my son and his wife. May they have a lifetime of happiness and joy together.<br />
<br />
The fall and winter months will be setting in soon. I have a painting project ready to go. If one looks at my older posts, there will be several on Hauverstover. I am painting these again, and have bought enough 10 mm soldiers to have an opposing army. It will be my other favorite Norm Crosby inspired imagi-nation of Franistan. I am still in the process of picking a color scheme for the uniforms. I hope to post these over the next couple of days.<br />
<br />Essjamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15312645606219749724noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4348639225984169827.post-57892056948087501772015-03-20T13:58:00.003-07:002015-03-20T16:20:46.620-07:00There is a whole world out there<p>I can't believe that it has been so long since I last posted. I have not been comfortable painting for a long time. Turns out I was growing a really professional set of cataracts and just flat couldn't see. Two weeks ago, the first surgery took place and the results have been weird, exciting and incredible. I picked up a 10 mm fig last night and could actually see the detail on the little guy's face. I picked up a brush and managed to get the paint precisely where it was meant to go. </p>
<p>Another Basement General over at <a href="http://jonscurioclashes.blogspot.com/">Jon's Curio Clashes</a> is interested in doing some 15MM ancients. He is painting up a ton of Early Imperial Romans. I will be painting a ton of Greeks and Macedonians to have some battles with him. So it is time to pick up the brush again, scrape off the rust and get busy painting. Looking forward to it.</p>

This is a quick post to show the figs. These are 10 mm Old Glory. They are based on 50 MM Litko bases. Here is the full line.</p>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjKb18EpVCQqxoHf_t1RAt32XOZ87mGIzQVQOO8cdOTGfYiyskAts8CssP91ZkLHhdsR7erQezwNoDdIiKVaI4RI7AptbLpactm4-NPt0SyYW25-GPTr73bqRPWzrGHO25Pvl_FvCQLOAk/s1600/HVR_2nd_Infantry_line.png" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" width="500" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjKb18EpVCQqxoHf_t1RAt32XOZ87mGIzQVQOO8cdOTGfYiyskAts8CssP91ZkLHhdsR7erQezwNoDdIiKVaI4RI7AptbLpactm4-NPt0SyYW25-GPTr73bqRPWzrGHO25Pvl_FvCQLOAk/s320/HVR_2nd_Infantry_line.png" /></a>
<p>Here is a close-up showing a little more detail. It actually pained me to paint the cords on the flag over the owl, but it had to be complete. There will be a change to the flag design coming for the 3rd infantry, and maybe others. I like them on paper, but this one was a challenge to paint. I need a simpler design.</p>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXt4YpK9tr0yrhbRrjA8qudJ5tBU02G3BIK59r9ahkoW8nswz1xb45JeudgWS8mUPMbVL-snrCSbfQcB-49btuFf9eurrJv69eJritW-AgzjHhtSVQpYzzSso2f_C3acCfiOxkE7aDf4Y/s1600/HVR_2nd_Infantry_line_close.png" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" width="500" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXt4YpK9tr0yrhbRrjA8qudJ5tBU02G3BIK59r9ahkoW8nswz1xb45JeudgWS8mUPMbVL-snrCSbfQcB-49btuFf9eurrJv69eJritW-AgzjHhtSVQpYzzSso2f_C3acCfiOxkE7aDf4Y/s320/HVR_2nd_Infantry_line_close.png" /></a>
<p>I have experimented with several backgrounds for taking pictures, this one was a medium gray. Not sure that I am satisfied yet. I guess that is part of the fun. </p>
<p>Next up will be my 28mm Norman Saga army. Wow, something in a larger scale for a while. I am currently blocking colors on my cavalry. I will post some shots when they are farther along. Right now they are pretty messy.</p> Essjamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15312645606219749724noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4348639225984169827.post-31337772669296643522013-12-02T15:01:00.000-08:002013-12-02T18:39:58.396-08:00Ducks Bellow for Rum <p>I just received my copy of Dux Bellorum. I am looking forward to reading it and playing a few games with the rest of the Basement Generals. However, it is the end of a very long day, so Ducks Bellowing seems extremely funny at this point. Probably not.</p>

<p>I bought these figures over the weekend to go with this rule set. I now have another project to get started. However, these are going to fall in line after my Saga Normans. All in all it was a good holiday weekend. I finished the Wilson's Creek ACW board game. I should be done with my 2nd Hauverstoverian infantry regiment soon. I just have the tricorn lace to paint and then I can base them. On the figs I bought for Dux, (Armalion - Leichte Weidener Ritter) the casting for the leader had a horse head coming out of his crown! A little snipping and filing and he looks tons better. His opponents would have been vulnerable because they would be laughing themselves silly.</p>

Working in larger scales, I have always used paper flags. This allowed either a purchase of a ready made flag or producing my own using a vector graphics program. When creating a vector based image, I can draw as large as I like, and then shrink the image down to the final size without loss of clarity. Hand painting these little 10mm flags has been a challenge. I have enjoyed it and the learning process as well.</p>
<p>In a previous post, I showed the flags for the Hauverstover 1st Infantry unit. This post is about the 2nd Infantry unit. Their flag is more complex. I think the flag came out pretty good, so it deserved a posting. This is what I was trying to represent in a flag that is less than a centimeter square. </p>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhkmq59wB6hkG5uGWRG9B8fe18cQBL6YjTCpAwVdUzad68zQm5LsbuHsJqk9QHSjNDZxGqwhdbutLYIMUMnqP6mLgrM4uxJGz_GcnO8_867n2NEHC9q2XGVd-OHtVWB6_-zcStC3HMN9i4/s1600/OwsleyBanner003.png" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" width="250" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhkmq59wB6hkG5uGWRG9B8fe18cQBL6YjTCpAwVdUzad68zQm5LsbuHsJqk9QHSjNDZxGqwhdbutLYIMUMnqP6mLgrM4uxJGz_GcnO8_867n2NEHC9q2XGVd-OHtVWB6_-zcStC3HMN9i4/s320/OwsleyBanner003.png"></a>
<p>The best I could do was to break the flag down into basic shapes. Then it was time to determine the level of detail to be added. At this scale the flag becomes impressionistic. The following image shows the basic striped flag and then the addition of the moon. The figs sat for a week or so at this point. Trepidation kicked in big time.</p>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAKT0APUVxozFlHIxurlzEXfu6WDvkbUrV2Uy4Y73dGQBQUuepMTLqladV36WLlhyphenhyphenjEpkMP5_w4EJDAMX_i0Ikfk6R_dLioaqbZjSrB5jPhV-razr0cO3ZPzvOfTB7VET15Xdsb0NLf44/s1600/HVR_2ndInfFlag_0002.png" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" width="500" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAKT0APUVxozFlHIxurlzEXfu6WDvkbUrV2Uy4Y73dGQBQUuepMTLqladV36WLlhyphenhyphenjEpkMP5_w4EJDAMX_i0Ikfk6R_dLioaqbZjSrB5jPhV-razr0cO3ZPzvOfTB7VET15Xdsb0NLf44/s320/HVR_2ndInfFlag_0002.png"></a>
<p>Next came the basic shape of the owl in flight. I just tried to get the head, ears, wings and tail onto the flag in the appropriate positions. It was really rough at this point.</p>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_zet8ESQzr0SJuQ-h7CLCRG6HHP6mrJrm7MxQefN9lmVKvsSRbWdJKACHqCmkGy4h4PreaWITL1oNHhoKi3vW5pa6VThECOGJ5k5HFOlQVppguw8ipCf2vV5GHNZNgu4yfc0ONu3x50Q/s1600/HVR_2ndInfFlag_0010.png" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" width="500" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_zet8ESQzr0SJuQ-h7CLCRG6HHP6mrJrm7MxQefN9lmVKvsSRbWdJKACHqCmkGy4h4PreaWITL1oNHhoKi3vW5pa6VThECOGJ5k5HFOlQVppguw8ipCf2vV5GHNZNgu4yfc0ONu3x50Q/s320/HVR_2ndInfFlag_0010.png"></a>
<p>Next were the lighter brown shapes for the face, wings and tail feathers. I began to realize that the ears were too big. I would have to trim them down later.</p>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj36zdM8AMZ2LZE2taYZPWZEM4LdwY3vO5KVVcqX4n2c9HYDORAQ-HT95jLhY2O4WnZFYnC2E5lvlPxShN7euCv715dhYPh-6nZszWwV2gSKpZlJZ5Yx3n0hjmfYTZE48j1UpeOHBc5sKc/s1600/HVR_2ndInfFlag_0015.png" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" width="500" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj36zdM8AMZ2LZE2taYZPWZEM4LdwY3vO5KVVcqX4n2c9HYDORAQ-HT95jLhY2O4WnZFYnC2E5lvlPxShN7euCv715dhYPh-6nZszWwV2gSKpZlJZ5Yx3n0hjmfYTZE48j1UpeOHBc5sKc/s320/HVR_2ndInfFlag_0015.png"></a>
<p>The final steps were adding a little lighter color to indicate the legs and eyes. Then three small black dots for the eyes and beak. </p>

<p>The figures still need to be finished, but I am pretty happy with the flags. A fun project all in all. Happy gaming!</p>

It just sat gathering dust for many days and nights. We have finally managed to play a couple of games. This is a report about the most recent one.</p>
<p>The scenario starts with the Union deployed south of an imaginary line through Leetown and Pratts Store. The cameras point of view is from the Confederate side looking south. This image shows Greg's initial deployment.</p>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhU2A-SvTPw-wr1gzNOvrlk3ByryvDh50iQBLvP5JyXaQ2vyx4pkTmFOqu9ny7kKVfzdIoGAOTCGVHz2aELss461E6hp7ooCyS0CiT9fn5FRpklYeXz0IMW-0MHC7eZ-9OMFwvwvM4cfKs/s1600/ACW_PeaRidge_002.png" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" width="500" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhU2A-SvTPw-wr1gzNOvrlk3ByryvDh50iQBLvP5JyXaQ2vyx4pkTmFOqu9ny7kKVfzdIoGAOTCGVHz2aELss461E6hp7ooCyS0CiT9fn5FRpklYeXz0IMW-0MHC7eZ-9OMFwvwvM4cfKs/s320/ACW_PeaRidge_002.png" /></a>
<p>The Rebel enter the game on the two roads at the north side of the table. In the image above a gray counter marks one of the starting positions. The other is off camera to the extreme right. For the first turn, all the Rebel troops are considered in Command Control. The rule set in use is Brothers At Arms, it stresses the importance of command and control. The Union has a good set of commanders, the Rebels don't. This has proven to be the Achilles heel for the rebel side in both games. Their forces are split to the east and west of Pea Ridge, one force is inevitably out of command. Its movement then is severely curtailed. </p>
<p>For this game, I chose to put the Rebel overall commander in proximity with the force attacking Elkhorn Tavern. This left McCulloh's force on the west on their own resources. The next image shows the battle progressing after several turns. The Union realized that the western Rebels are having trouble moving and swept forward to capture the objective in the middle. At this point, the Union owns 4 of the 6 objective markers, but the battle in and around Elkhorn Tavern is heating up. </p>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhI5kqRAXF5RIJLTNBkjYbHaNMLBtHZmkRCnVX-KlaC9Mp0IfkI66pemNEd2PPO79dKB-LJM02_W91vJZmkQdEcY8wQUXwZPhD6u6Yx78aNF7hct739BFuzYLkog5jFFZrzhpjjcoeQTcI/s1600/ACW_PeaRidge_003.png" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" width="500" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhI5kqRAXF5RIJLTNBkjYbHaNMLBtHZmkRCnVX-KlaC9Mp0IfkI66pemNEd2PPO79dKB-LJM02_W91vJZmkQdEcY8wQUXwZPhD6u6Yx78aNF7hct739BFuzYLkog5jFFZrzhpjjcoeQTcI/s320/ACW_PeaRidge_003.png" /></a>
<p>The battle on the west side of Pea Ridge is a non event. The Rebels grabbed the closest objective. However, there was always the problem with command to keep that force moving. That front basically just stalled with the occasionally exchange of cannon fire.</p>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-U6s3Nr2wKngwrlMv5HDyCDk8SDLAGf6bYzavqz2SBc6IOfHq_8n4IX0zZfvmrADtiTBMDkZ0HcEa7X_cnjPCPKX4JAVi76PKa-dgGgluL8JiIr8a4Rf2qD_fX_BAOtMOEzAkLL8P4rw/s1600/ACW_PeaRidge_005.png" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" width="500" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-U6s3Nr2wKngwrlMv5HDyCDk8SDLAGf6bYzavqz2SBc6IOfHq_8n4IX0zZfvmrADtiTBMDkZ0HcEa7X_cnjPCPKX4JAVi76PKa-dgGgluL8JiIr8a4Rf2qD_fX_BAOtMOEzAkLL8P4rw/s320/ACW_PeaRidge_005.png" /></a>
<p>The action was on the east side of Pea Ridge. The rebs made some good progress, grabbing the objective to the southeast of Elkhorn Tavern. The Union was being pushed back. </p>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhjFaYs2YsNJ4U_PdyBuehqMXoS8lIMY3DLNR0QUcqSvNPP2LEOtuN-qzlxixFD-QScj5gtieTGVUnCi7G-2KV8dxK8ymszY7hs2_JlY0GfGVpGs_t5emxwdWaoX35IwuZqtcX8HeNJa8/s1600/ACW_PeaRidge_004.png" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" width="500" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhjFaYs2YsNJ4U_PdyBuehqMXoS8lIMY3DLNR0QUcqSvNPP2LEOtuN-qzlxixFD-QScj5gtieTGVUnCi7G-2KV8dxK8ymszY7hs2_JlY0GfGVpGs_t5emxwdWaoX35IwuZqtcX8HeNJa8/s320/ACW_PeaRidge_004.png" /></a>
<p>And then that one union counter holding Clemon's Farm dug in like a tick. The rebs threw overwhelming firepower against that unit. It was not overwhelmed, it would not budge. The Rebel offensive stalled. </p>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZiXR-CYGIH6vZ-2Tt6GKFAyRTWeprQxxJ7IDMxqrVcskAut5g_ZY2vpPZQA6RMF8ZZhG1wjBo9_QsuypZ4qwRLczILX2376ErzvqdZQ9NzeO9Xgs1ZsRb5GdG7JfJb9uv_AwAlX1dv10/s1600/ACW_PeaRidge_006.png" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" width="500" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZiXR-CYGIH6vZ-2Tt6GKFAyRTWeprQxxJ7IDMxqrVcskAut5g_ZY2vpPZQA6RMF8ZZhG1wjBo9_QsuypZ4qwRLczILX2376ErzvqdZQ9NzeO9Xgs1ZsRb5GdG7JfJb9uv_AwAlX1dv10/s320/ACW_PeaRidge_006.png" /></a>
<p>In the game, day light was running out, and we were running short of libations. The game ended in a draw just as the beer and scotch ran out. Here is the final position at sunset. </p>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiiSXI9WAASaFeqnHdlToUTTFchpVH0KTJlDaEfcPfYL07yQrs41qpC5TWXZKFbIFOT5EhsqXJioZdikIr7hmyhiM5zeMZ_JhX_EcUv-zS4h5AkeSjOrO1kMaqXTv6CCurPexiB4xx9ISM/s1600/ACW_PeaRidge_007.png" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" width="500" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiiSXI9WAASaFeqnHdlToUTTFchpVH0KTJlDaEfcPfYL07yQrs41qpC5TWXZKFbIFOT5EhsqXJioZdikIr7hmyhiM5zeMZ_JhX_EcUv-zS4h5AkeSjOrO1kMaqXTv6CCurPexiB4xx9ISM/s320/ACW_PeaRidge_007.png" /></a>
<p>All in all a good game. I like the rule set, the mechanics are fairly clear. Command and Control is the heart of this game. If you are out of command, your units just sit. I am going to build the Wilson Creek game next. Same rules, but hopefully it will be a bit more even on C&C. </p>

Gerhard Steinmauer had met a dark haired, blue eyed hellion named Elke Osterwald and had been totally smitten. Their courtship was a tempestuous one. Elke had led Gerhard on a merry chase before accepting a proposal of marriage. </p>
<p>When it became time to form an army for the defense of Hauverstover, the topic of uniform coloring had risen. Gerhard liked a white coat with blue pants, while Elke preferred a gray coat with dark red trousers. In a moment of compromise, a blend of blue and red was suggested for the trousers and a dark purple was adopted. Both Gerhard and Elke claimed this compromise as their own idea and had great fun over the years arguing about it. However, when it came to the coat coloring, neither would budge a bit.</p>
<p>Duke Gerhard was very close to making a proclamation that the Infantry dress would be white coats with purple trousers. He was in his study, drafting the order, when a quick tap on his shoulder redirected his attention. He turned to see Elke looking at him with a particularly mischievous glint in her eye. </p>
<p>"I have interesting news my dear stuffy old Duke!"</p>
<p>Gerhard just quirked an eyebrow, and awaited the announcement. The last time had been about gophers eating the tulip bulbs in the gardens and how a cute little rat-terrier would solve the problem. The dratted dog was constantly getting muddy paws on his boots. </p>
<p>"My love, you are going to be a father. I hope you are pleased."</p>
<p>The Duke was overwhelmed with emotion, and grabbed his wife for an embrace. They laughed and kissed and stared at each other, both delighted with the news.</p>
<p>"Elke my dear, this is so wonderful. May I grant you anything? The Moon? Just say the word! "</p>
<p>By this time, Elke had noticed the draft of the order. With a quick smile, "Gray Coats?"</p>
<p>The Duke smiled and wrote the following order. "On all odd numbered infantry regiments the standard dress will be a white coat with dark purple trousers. In honor to the duchess, the even numbered regiments will have gray jackets and dark purple trousers."</p>
<p>Over time the gray-coated regiments became known as The Duchess' Guard. That general order stands to this day.</p>

They came out pretty well, that is they will be okay for table top quality. Now I can get back to my Maurice / Hauverstover project. That is of course, if nothing else grabs my fancy. </p>
<p>Over the years, I have experimented with different mixes of static grass colors to arrive at something that looks good on the table top. But I have never been completely satisfied. This is another batch that is close, but still not exactly what I am working for. It is almost there, so I am recording the formula for later use. Maybe with just a couple more tweaks it will be what I want</p>
<ul>
<li>2 TBSP - Medium Green Static Grass</li>
<li>1 TBSP - Harvest Gold Static Grass</li>
<li>1 TBSP - Green Grass Fine Turf</li>
<li>1 TBSP - Summer Lawn Blend Flock and Turf</li>
</ul>
<p>The limbers from the front</p>

<p>Now, I think I had better get a new coat of wax on my car before winter sets in. Happy gaming!</p>
Essjamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15312645606219749724noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4348639225984169827.post-33208745831365309272013-10-09T10:46:00.001-07:002013-10-09T10:58:54.808-07:00ACW - Limber project<p>The ACW Union Artillery Limber project is almost complete for my Longstreet forces. These are in 15 MM using Old Glory castings. I have never found the need to paint limbers before. Simply turning an artillery base around indicated that it was limbered or not. I may resort to that same technique in the future. After this project is done, I will have two Union Artillery Limbers, the issue is the cost of an actual cannon model per limber. Seeing these two cannon effectively out of play drives a stake into my parsimonious personality. </p>
<p>An overall view of the pieces that will go into two limbers. The draft horses were painted very plainly. Most of the time was spent on the harness. A few of the horse models were given socks and blazes but I didn't go overboard.</p>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhF2doJoPfGBJc5CDeVc-bF61f8IS0E-DCU_8apfAhyoP0owQbwDwC6P0gVSh2Wk_z057sUYxz9EhZgeKxi4lK_AAmrrE5DlBqyNCpI5fau7afqyHXJPmdwJSz5joF6-GAl6m-EcueWZI8/s1600/ACW001.png" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" width="500" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhF2doJoPfGBJc5CDeVc-bF61f8IS0E-DCU_8apfAhyoP0owQbwDwC6P0gVSh2Wk_z057sUYxz9EhZgeKxi4lK_AAmrrE5DlBqyNCpI5fau7afqyHXJPmdwJSz5joF6-GAl6m-EcueWZI8/s320/ACW001.png" /></a>
<p>This is a little closer view to the models that represent one limber. I am now to the point that I just want to get these done so I can go back to my Hauverstover project. Since these are limbers and will not be on the table top that often this level of quality is going to be good enough. By the way, nice focus on the shot. I was aiming for the horses in front. Auto-focus evidently decided to ignore me.</p>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhw-8Zc78MyWDIG9gc_ePWe6yoCW9coOyT2cMUIq_LfOrW5FzEMjvJjmv1KlxYYJeb9Hv04YEOFeKfsnlfneHRFuG-tzcTowASeQEr_1jO64GqAzZbMQ-_Oe9fnF1l6RPs7UYpPtWpzq5U/s1600/ACW002.png" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" width="500" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhw-8Zc78MyWDIG9gc_ePWe6yoCW9coOyT2cMUIq_LfOrW5FzEMjvJjmv1KlxYYJeb9Hv04YEOFeKfsnlfneHRFuG-tzcTowASeQEr_1jO64GqAzZbMQ-_Oe9fnF1l6RPs7UYpPtWpzq5U/s320/ACW002.png" /></a>
<p>Finally, I looked all over the interweb and through the Osprey books to find the correct painting for a triangular pennant. Everything I could find stated that flags were either rectangular or swallow-tail. This is a compromise, that I found in one of the Osprey books. I am also showing this little guy because his mustache came out perfect.</p>

<p>Finally, on recommendations from some of the Basement Generals, I took a little road trip over the past weekend to Harrisburg, Missouri. A little town in the middle of the state about 15 miles north of I-70. The target was a BBQ joint named Lonnie Ray's. If barbeque is a favorite of yours, make this pilgrimage. The brisket was amazing. I will making this trip again soon!</p>

I was intrigued because the site said that one could build the battle board in 3D. Maybe I will get to that in the future, but that may end up being an unrealized project. Pea Ridge is the first of three that I assembled.</p>
<p>After the purchase, one receives a ZIP file download that has several PDF files included. These PDFs include the battle board, counters, rules, instructions for making the 3D board and a small history about the particular battle.</p>
<p>One of the first things I realized is that the battle board is on A4 metric paper. I have a B/W printer, so off to one of the big chains that does color laser printing. I found that printing Actual Size, centered on Legal size paper produced the correct results. Next was a visit to a Hobby and Craft store to get some Black Foam Core, Spray Adhesive and Mat paper. </p>
<p>Assembly was pretty easy since the map was kept to 2D. Note, when working with foam core, have several new #11 blades ready for your knife. When cutting with a dull blade, the foam will tear and look nasty. A razor sharp knife glides through the material effortlessly, but the foam core dulls a new one pretty quickly. I used three blades for this project. I wanted a nice clean look.</p>
<p>Battle Board</p>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOllKFEvDoXg0d6D45XtWqK0EUsHoR9mlW1gElPgQykS3SxQc61K7YiycODxltTOQOTe5gj9g4FKFO5X6KDzg7DkC5frK6I2ibISYsGrJ9C-exbqKRMnnwsrlizsbRXlvd72hqf6UZfNc/s1600/BattleMap.png" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" width="500" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOllKFEvDoXg0d6D45XtWqK0EUsHoR9mlW1gElPgQykS3SxQc61K7YiycODxltTOQOTe5gj9g4FKFO5X6KDzg7DkC5frK6I2ibISYsGrJ9C-exbqKRMnnwsrlizsbRXlvd72hqf6UZfNc/s320/BattleMap.png" /></a>
<p>All the games in this series use the Brothers At Arms rules set. It looks to be a pretty straight forward rule set with some interesting rules for Command and Control and Zones of Control. I look forward to playing the initial Pea Ridge game this week. Are you ready Greg?</p>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVulKdkAQQI_bQoLYENTMHddmvDH6Oq0nchsViTtIYWM4TW5naOZQQw3K2xpvxxIYMODXb89VTXyjjoeifcZ2bAKqMRlETHmIHocrsFfmomxu7wkPTwpBdJtIRvE6bXtnOx9KKfvxdxo8/s1600/Rules.png" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" width="500" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVulKdkAQQI_bQoLYENTMHddmvDH6Oq0nchsViTtIYWM4TW5naOZQQw3K2xpvxxIYMODXb89VTXyjjoeifcZ2bAKqMRlETHmIHocrsFfmomxu7wkPTwpBdJtIRvE6bXtnOx9KKfvxdxo8/s320/Rules.png" /></a>
<p>I do not understand why the authors of this game chose to create hex based unit counters. It meant just that much more cutting and trimming and doesn't really add anything of value. Square counters would have served just as well. On my next game, First Manassas, I will be converting the counters to squares. However this is a minor nit, all in all the assembly was easy and was a nice Saturday afternoon project. </p>

<p>Finally my OCD kicked in, since I was not able to find a box that I liked. I made one, and used the remaining Pea Ridge cover page as the box cover. I now understand why games are so flaming expensive. There is a lot of work to build the board, make the counters, create the rules and package the whole thing. All told, I have about 25$ into this one game for purchase, printing and craft supplies. That seems like a pretty good deal to me.</p>

This session continued that trend. On Saturday afternoon I found one of the special ones. This was a scenario based in the privateer years on the Spanish Main. HMS Redoubt had sailed from Port Royale with a small invasion force. The target was the rich but sleepy Spanish town of Santa Domingo.</p>
<p>I did not get the name of the game master other than Jeff with a nom de plume of Gully. This oversight withstanding, Gully put on a first class game. This little video is just a pan across the town, just to give you an idea of the amount of work and preparation that went into this game. Truly impressive.</p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.blogger.com/video.g?token=AD6v5dzXEpyqYj6rLZ73LdQdcp2nQHnX989Q5lrljPKf7KlmrlYI1WPKksp6HKfCGcTEBmWk3EQ0_5cjI9pu_Amd0Q' class='b-hbp-video b-uploaded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<br />
<p>The town may have been sleepy, but it was armed to the teeth. Here are some photos of what awaited the British invaders. I love the fact that Gully included fishermen on the docks as an extra detail flourish. Also, countless tables, chairs, crates and barrels were scattered about.</p>

<p>I volunteered for the task of acting as a distraction. I sailed my little boats to the far edge of the town and started my assault. This was to distract some of the guns from focusing on the main invasion. The first Spanish artillery salvo sunk one of my boats. Soldiers swimming toward shore do not constitute much of a threat. The soldiers swam slowly, weighted down with guns, knives, swords and menacing facial expressions. They were all killed to a man before they reached shore.</p>
<p>My other boat came under fire from cannon, swivel guns and musketry. The fisherman even threw a carp in my direction. The crew in the second boat was also killed. All of them except the officer. As the boat reached shore, he was facing 3 cannon, 2 swivel guns and 10 or 15 muskets. He apologized for the misunderstanding in his most polite and formal Spanish, and then promptly surrendered.</P>

<p>At this stage in the day, I was about spent on playing war games. I found a bunch of friends and we played board games for the rest of the evening. All in all looking back over the convention, I had a great time filled with lots of laughter. As the convention was closing, my board game buddies went to a local establishment and finished the time with drinks and appetizers.</p>

<p>Thanks Recruits! See you next year.</p>

This is going to be a fairly long post but I want to capture my experience while it is fresh in my mind. Recruits is an annual convention, generally held in middle September. My first impression was of the gorgeous weather that had bloomed for the weekend. The massive heat of a mid-west summer had broken, and the sunny, high 70s temperature was absolutely perfect. This post shows a limited number of games where I participated. I am sure there will be more pictures and information at the Recruits web site about the overall experience.</p>
<a href="http://recruits.mtswebsites.com/" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQvrecl0tm4Z1SFglP-ca5y9mOq9LNjX74qixg4VNc_VwchsBVmNJnwyyYeoQ70PHUgbrv2hSd6wXin-uMuj7Df2xurrt7Avn1qtCplL1d_jzJUPSElFjun68bV17CRxVRneyO35soqRs/s320/RecruitsLogo.png" width="500" /></a>
<p>The second impression of the convention is how inexpensive it is. 5$ gains you a pass for the weekend! So I went over on Friday night around 6:00 PM, played until closing at 11:00 PM and was then back for an all day Saturday. On Saturday, the doors opened at 8:00 AM and gaming started around 9:00 AM. I played all day and finished at 10:00 PM completely sated with gaming. The point about expense needs to be taken further. Food and drinks are available on site for minimal costs. A bottle of water is 1$. Hot dogs are 1$. Slices of pizza 2$. This allowed me to focus the vast majority of my gaming funds on wargaming paraphernalia. There are vendors, a silent auction and a raffle. I spent money in all three venues. </p>
<p>The third impression, is the age disparity between gamers. This convention is held at a high school, with the intent to introduce new gamers into the hobby. There are old grey-beards like yours truly down to spotted face teenagers that are finding a way to socialize over a gaming table. It is an interesting mix and a lot of fun. Finally, it was a weekend of getting reacquainted with old friends. That is the part I treasure most. Now on to the events!</p>
<p>Friday night I played in a game of French and Indian Wars. This is done with 54MM figures and beautiful scenery by Chris at <a href="http://cluckamok.blogspot.com">CluckAmok</a>. The idea was for the British to protect two different built up areas, a little fort and a small homestead. The French and Indians were to burn both establishments. The British had some hidden militia in both areas. The Indians could appear anywhere on the board. The first two images are an overview of the board.</p>

<p>On Saturday, I played in an American Revolutionary War game, followed by a sea assault in the age of pirates. First up is the American Revolutionary game. The scenario was that a American supply train had to start on one side of the battlefield, move along a road, cross a bridge and then get off the battlefield. The English wanted to destroy or capture the wagons, the Americans needed to protect it. I think those oxen realized they were the evening meal, because they were slow! They moved 2" per turn.</p>
<p>Here is a view of the battlefield with the supply train on the right. It would take almost 7 turns before the wagons would reach the bridge.</p>

<p>The militia performed admirably by stalling the British advance well past all expectations. The losses on both sides were brutal. However the militia was eventually driven back. Losses were high and they finally routed. </p>

<p>The right flank of the British was in no hurry to engage the American Regulars now opposing them. Fresh Americans with artillery waited. The action switched to the center of the battlefield. The British assaulted the town in hopes to cut the road and capture the supply wagons.</p>

<p>Losses were high on both sides. The British reached the town and the American Regulars were getting shaky. It was neck and neck at this point, but we were out of time. It was ruled that the British had a narrow victory. The damnable oxen hadn't crossed the bridge and the British were pressing.</p>

<p>This was a nice game, but it tested my math abilities. The best thing about this game was the great guys playing and the mountain of dead markers that the GM had painted. Looking at the table, one could see where the lines had come together, fought, bounced and slammed together again.</p>
<p>This post is getting rather long with a lot of images. I will post about the Invasion on the Spanish Main in part 2. </p>

I found it a quite refreshing slant on Children at Play. Now if only had a sign for when I am gaming or painting. It would be a scary one for when I am painting. Picture an aging, overweight, gray-haired man wearing opti-visors, listening to rock and roll, squinting to get the point of a brush on that last damn small detail. On second thought, maybe I don't really need a sign.</p>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgi3khK3hQv-Xq6BZJX2SBcu3hfd7oRXWXkWAwSwo1G0Z1UKczOlaDu-fCS0DAMVBpr8dPlnhLX1neCwwkI_hNTUvijsaE2WQvHRCRtez1pfFURm7iPzcoLROGLZKdPdoSDdyisLnCBiAU/s1600/WeNeedASign.png" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" width="500" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgi3khK3hQv-Xq6BZJX2SBcu3hfd7oRXWXkWAwSwo1G0Z1UKczOlaDu-fCS0DAMVBpr8dPlnhLX1neCwwkI_hNTUvijsaE2WQvHRCRtez1pfFURm7iPzcoLROGLZKdPdoSDdyisLnCBiAU/s320/WeNeedASign.png" /></a>
<p>And that brings me to the point, under that signage, my Union artillery and dismounted cavalry project is complete. I can't wait to bring these boys out for Longstreet soon. </p>

<p>I have been using the same basing technique for a few years. That is, build up the basing using grey pumice gel media, then color it dark brown and dry brush successive colors toward a light tan. This gives me a dried mud looking base that I can then add static grass onto. I think they look pretty good. Something possessed me this time to try and finish a few of the dismounted cavalry bases by dry brushing different shades of green onto the pumice. I was not impressed and will stick to my old method from here on out. If one looks closely at the image below, notice two or three Dismounted Cavalry bases completely covered in static grass. These are the ones that have the failed experiment. </p>

<p>Also, Recruits Gaming convention is this coming weekend in Lee's Summit, Missouri. Hope to see you there. I just won't be wearing the Opti-Visors! </p>

It is now time to load up the project table. This has not changed a great deal, however, with the enthusiasm that Longstreet has generated, priorities have been rearranged. Like most gamers, I have to reorganize all my stuff periodically. My ancient Greek project has been pulled and the figures are in storage boxes. I am actually thinking about doing that in 6MM. There is a better arrangement for lighting now, so hopefully that will help when I am painting.</p>
<p>Here is the overall table, ACW up front, My Maurice infantry behind that and off in the distance, some 28 MM French infantry. These last are for Lead Addict, I may eventually get these done.</p>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-VqSyEmbRB1PbEJOWarIvfFvb78iCCybijEHHytKSuoYVkhTu13FJs3e99_29W5TJjNcdfHwzOBpmyB1RnqO_z9TqHzuIlZPHs-e70OKiL6QJpFsl625qrDZG4CU_fcEnVLsLv7VGhUg/s1600/CurrentProjects_20130903.png" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" width="500" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-VqSyEmbRB1PbEJOWarIvfFvb78iCCybijEHHytKSuoYVkhTu13FJs3e99_29W5TJjNcdfHwzOBpmyB1RnqO_z9TqHzuIlZPHs-e70OKiL6QJpFsl625qrDZG4CU_fcEnVLsLv7VGhUg/s320/CurrentProjects_20130903.png" /></a>
<p>I was really surprised to find that my 15 mm ACW project was almost complete. There are just a few fill-in pieces that I need to complete both sides of my collection. I did not have any Union Artillery however, that was addressed. Here are the boys ready for the basing process. I use a coarse gray pumice in an acrylic medium as the base material. It has been applied. Next steps are dry-brushing the colors and then adding a little static grass and shrubbery. </p>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgESwbf7ycwMGvts5eb0iUkvBFVdwiEYlLiyhkpx1aQrF5I9Po74NEiBlnTD-0kWhNGc3djJO0N1tta0pvV8VeZ3VJOk77xZ9deBcxVXv8BxpTB49xodj-P6TFLA2qiJUptCu0AROoRHA8/s1600/LS_Arty_003.png" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" width="500" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgESwbf7ycwMGvts5eb0iUkvBFVdwiEYlLiyhkpx1aQrF5I9Po74NEiBlnTD-0kWhNGc3djJO0N1tta0pvV8VeZ3VJOk77xZ9deBcxVXv8BxpTB49xodj-P6TFLA2qiJUptCu0AROoRHA8/s320/LS_Arty_003.png" /></a>
<p>While digging through my collection, I found these dismounted Cavalry boys that were on old cardboard bases. They weren't even flocked. I am changing these over to Litko one-inch square bases. That is my current project, hopefully I will get the Arty and dismounted Cavalry finished by Thursday. Once that is done, I will work on some Confederate dismounted cavalry, then gasp, my collection will be complete! </p>

After looking at my 15mm ACW troops, I found that I was short on Union Artillery. It is unknown whether these can be finished before this evenings game, but at least they are in the works. </p>
<p>Six guns, plus six four-man crews. So the question becomes, why am I blogging instead of painting? </p>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjptSKIPwwegU8-HSNlk-GCsjnFnzmucGI-bkFt01YxH_V6a-5NRDjCKjpDc6PXERGapo4XD2CfZc61Jm5_XPLhbOFX97wmniftvz0xyqf1zCJ2YjDogF-odsofDRB5_1_6LfDT-MbwgfQ/s1600/LS_Arty_001.png" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" width="500" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjptSKIPwwegU8-HSNlk-GCsjnFnzmucGI-bkFt01YxH_V6a-5NRDjCKjpDc6PXERGapo4XD2CfZc61Jm5_XPLhbOFX97wmniftvz0xyqf1zCJ2YjDogF-odsofDRB5_1_6LfDT-MbwgfQ/s320/LS_Arty_001.png" /></a>
<p>The basic colors are blocked in on the crews. The guns are finished. These are not great quality, but will be just fine for the table top. I am taking a quick break to write this and grab some lunch. Back to it shortly. </p>

The full version of Longstreet arrived today. Kudos to Sam Mustafa's processing, ordered on 8/19 and delivered to the heartlands in four days. Not bad at all. We have played a couple of games using the Lite version of these rules. I can't wait to see what he has added. </p>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUPMJsXv3bejF46YIOJEKm19pmTukGE-FudDCWoM6D2xzcEsANWTKfkdQ87xgPAmKeGQKatqy1b-1LX9r9Q-i6uyBcSNHdZ8MA4h5C6K8sibMhD6yMmMKyDmOWjyHsllGZiXzDUmhiy4w/s1600/LongSt_006.png" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" width="500" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUPMJsXv3bejF46YIOJEKm19pmTukGE-FudDCWoM6D2xzcEsANWTKfkdQ87xgPAmKeGQKatqy1b-1LX9r9Q-i6uyBcSNHdZ8MA4h5C6K8sibMhD6yMmMKyDmOWjyHsllGZiXzDUmhiy4w/s320/LongSt_006.png" /></a>
<p>One addition is a campaign system. I will be playing a Union Colonel Fredrick (Fritz) Wolfe. There may be an actual ancestor with that name. Time to do a little genealogy research. </p>
<p>The Basement Generals have more guys interested in ACW than in the Marlburian period. My Maurice project will be delayed a bit as I finish my 15MM ACW collection. I primarily need Union artillery and a bit more Union Cavalry. Not to worry though, Maurice will continue soon. </p>
<p>A very nice way to get a weekend started, a new rule set and an interesting Ale!</p>

We have enjoyed the lite version tremendously. As soon as I received the email announcement today, I bought my set. The PDF is available immediately. The bound version and cards should be here in about a week.</p>
<p>New things I have already noticed in a quick skim are the inclusion of Cavalry, troop ratings and a campaign system. This will be a night of reading the rules and thinking about a good nom de plume for a future ACW commander. Finally, will he be Union or Confederate? </p>
<p>Now, I have to take a look at my 15mm ACW troops again. Federal artillery is needed, but what else? This hobby does not help my ADD </p> Essjamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15312645606219749724noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4348639225984169827.post-63221419468156878952013-08-16T08:53:00.000-07:002013-08-16T08:53:06.645-07:00ACW - Longstreet <p>Last night the Basement Generals tried <a href="http://www.sammustafa.com/honour/http://">Sam Mustafa's Longstreet</a> for the second time. We met at the Baron's castle for the weekly gaming and beer tasting soiree. See the <a href="http://baronvonj.blogspot.com">Baron's report</a> about this battle and the beer at his blog. </p>
<p>I drew one of the Johnny Reb commands. I had the confederate left flank, and my objective was the far town. The victory conditions were control of the two towns and the center hill. The towns were already occupied, so the battle was going to be for the center hill. My job was to push the Federal right flank so it could not join the battle for the center. </p>
<p>Greg played the Union commander controlling their right flank. He played a defensive shoot and give ground strategy that was quite effective. I chased him all the way back to the wheat fields just outside of the town, but my forces were shot to hell. Longstreet superbly allowed this defensive strategy, and gave me several options in attacking. The cards in Longstreet are the heart of the system. </p>
<p>The initial deployment, my troops are ready to move forward </p>

<p>There is quite a battle at the little rock wall as my troops moved forward. Union artillery was forcing me to spend a lot of cards absorbing hits. As we are finding out, cards are crucial. </p>

<p>On a different note - my order for more 10MM Marlburian troops arrived. With two bags of Generals! A painting weekend looms as I get these ready for Maurice. </p>
